Third Year Studio Arch 3020 Foundation Studio IV
SPRING 2020
This studio took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, so most of the process was virtual. As a result, there are limited models available. The prompt for this studio was to design an Academic Village at a chosen site. My site was the Lambeth Residential College. The requirements included housing for professors, a cafeteria, student library spaces, and accommodations for the dorms surrounding the building.
My design, a village on a landscape, aims to redefine the idea of grounding within a university while preserving the existing landscape. The site includes a stream that runs around the existing parking lot, and I created a promenade that connects a series of pavilions housing the different functions of the Academic Village. This connects the existing Lambeth Housing to the amenities and opportunities for engagement. I based this design on Jefferson's academic village, citing his ideal democratic ideas for an academical village.
"We wish to establish the upper & healthier country & more centrally for the state of an University on a plan so broad & liberal & modern, as to be worth patronizing with the public support and be a temptation to the youth of other states to come and drink of the cup of knowledge."
